Part II

To understand the side effects of antacids ( Tums, Pepsid AC, Zantac ) and acid blocking medications (Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec) it is necessary to examine how they work.

Antacids neutralize the acids (diminish their effects) that should be in your stomach while acid blocking
medications work by suppressing your body’s natural secretion of hydrochloric acid (HCL). The overall effect is that hydrochloric acid (HCL) is rendered ineffective. *Remember the reason why the stomach is designed to be so highly acidic is to break down your food so that when it passes into your intestines it can then be absorbed. If this doesn't happen, your body is now setup to experience a whole host of issues in the stomach, intestines & colon from your undigested meal.

Despite temporarily reducing your pain neither drug addresses the underlying cause of why you're having heartburn or GERD. If you check closely, you'll see that most antacids include
a disclaimer that they should not be used for longer than 14 days and acid blocking medications are to be discontinued
after 8 weeks. There are good reasons for this. When stomach acid is neutralized or reduced the body experiences a decline in health due to mal-absorption of nutrients. This is not something you'll immediately feel or know, but over time your body will suffer the effects of not being nourished. Low stomach acid impairs the body’s ability to absorb calcium, iron, magnesium, selenium, zinc, folic acid, vitamins A, B1, B6, B12 and E. In addition, it weakens the anti-microbial action of the stomach which normally kills food born bacteria and fungi.

These are just a few of the side effects you should be aware of:

So what can you do?

One of the first things you can do is to change your eating habits. Eating refined carbohydrates, and processed foods exacerbate the problem. Eat foods foods in their whole state & choose organic meats whenever possible.

Secondly, it's important to have enough B1(Thiamine) & Zinc in your diet as these are absolutely essential for HCL production.

Add 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to 4 ounces of water & drink this before each meal. If you experience any symptoms from this, it's time for a thorough nutritional evaluation with me.

Your digestive system is at the core of your physical well being & health. Every part of your body is affected by what you eat and how
your digestive system absorbs nutrients. This is quite literally how your body rebuilds itself. So you truly are what you eat!
We're all guilty of eating more than we should whether it's from celebrating our teams Super Bowl victory by having a few extra buffalo wings & potato skins or hastily eating that slice of pizza as you race off to your next client.

Heartburn is a familiar foe to roughly 50% of Americans. The most common sign of heartburn is a painful sensation in the throat, stomach or chest. Other symptoms can include, belching, a persistent sore throat or a sour taste in your mouth. So many people have experienced heartburn that it has come to be accepted that this is just a normal discomfort one must pay in order to enjoy certain foods. Sadly, the overwhelming thought is "this is just how my body works." But, just because something is COMMON, does not mean it is NORMAL.

Acid indigestion is probably the most misdiagnosed & understood condition in health care. To help you understand a bit more, I'd like to walk you through a mini physiology course.

Digestion begins first in your mouth. The process of chewing your food is meant to break it down into small pieces so that you're able to access the nutrients needed to fuel your body. Once you swallow & food reaches your stomach, via the esophagus, your stomach stores the food & mixes it with digestive juices & enzymes in an effort to break the food down into even smaller parts. Stomach acid has to be strong stuff since it is meant to burn through flesh. After all that's what a double cheeseburger is....animal flesh. In order to effectively break down your food, the PH of your stomach needs to be in the range of 2-3 (highly acidic). This is basic physiology.

Now imagine that you are engaging in the 2nd scenario (racing to see a client) I created above & you begin to experience heartburn. Conventional wisdom tell us that stress & indigestion go hand in hand; too much stress causes our stomachs to produce more stomach acid which leads to heartburn & ulcers. Yet, ANY physiology textbook will tell you that when the body is in a stress handling situation your Sympathetic Nervous System (fight or flight) is fully engaged. What does this mean exactly? Well, when you're eating that pizza in your car on your way to see a client & you get stuck in a massive pileup on Rte. 3 North. You glance at the clock & realize there is no way you're going to make this meeting & you begin to feel anxious & angry. At this point, if not earlier in the day, your sympathetic nervous system becomes activated. When in this stress handling situation, the body will divert ALL available energy AWAY from the GI tract. Think about it...if you were being chased by a bear in the woods, does it really make any sense for your body to increase the digestion of your lunch or does it make more sense for it to put all it's energy into getting your legs to move fast & escape? When you eat food in a stress handling situation, the food sits in your stomach & it waits. What is it waiting for you ask? Well, it's waiting for the Parasympathetic Nervous system to become engaged. It's responsible for Rest & Digest.

So, if stress isn't causing this heartburn/indigestion what is? In most cases, it's a LACK of stomach acid..............................yes, I said a LACK of stomach acid. Without enough acid, your food sits in your stomach & rots. The stomach is a nice warm, moist place & what happens to food when it's in that environment? Yup...it rots. With rotting comes the organic gases & acids of fermentation & putrefaction which is not supposed to happen in your stomach. THIS leads to burning of the stomach & lower esophagus & hence, heartburn.

Next month, I will delve into how acid blockers seriously hinder your health & how you can maximize your own stomach acid & get rid of heartburn.

I get this question every now and then when talking to people about the normal structural alignment of the spine. Most everybody realizes that the spine should be straight when looking at it from the front or back. However, this is NOT the case when looking at it from the side.

Many people are unaware that the normal structural alignment of the spine, from the side view, has three distinct curves. The name for this is lordosis (neck and lower back) and kyphosis (mid-back) These curves can be objectively measured with specific structural x-rays and they have a normal value associated with them. which is no different than objectively measuring eyesight, blood pressure, or body temperature. Proper alignment of these curves not only provides balance, support, and shock absorption, they also allow nerve impulses to flow freely from the brain into the limbs and organs.

Perhaps the most important curve is the neck curve or the cervical lordosis. Since this is closest to the brain and the majority of the nerves have to pass through this region to get from the brain to the rest of the body, normal structure is vital. Research has shown that losing the normal curve in the neck causes the spinal cord, nerve roots, and blood vessels to stretch like a rubber band thus causing a pathological tension. This tension can travel all the way down to the lower back region and can be a reason why someone has lower body symptoms. This is also why we examine the entire structure of the spine even if someone has lower back pain.

I came across a recent study that shows a dramatic and eye-opening correlation between the structural alignment of an athletes neck curve and the extent of injury sustained during head-first or direct impact blows to the front-top of the skull.

It was found that athletes with straight or reversed cervical curves (Both of which are ABNORMAL) are prone to complex injuries to the cervical tissues and nerve roots, while those who maintain a normal structural cervical curve have a lot less chance of long-term and complex injuries. This is just another example of how "structure dictates function" and how having an abnormal structure decreases the bodies ability to optimally function.

So whenever I'm describing the normal structural alignment of the spine to anyone, I include the side view. Many of life's activities can change the structural alignment of the spine such as poor postural habits, accidents, and injuries.

Fortunately there exists specific structural corrective techniques to correct abnormally aligned neck curves; which will in turn improve curvature and overall health.

Sitting is the "new smoking." When I recently heard this I had to stop & think about it a moment. It would seem obvious that if you're a sedentary person that sitting alone would have negative effects on your health, but there are all sorts of studies and statistics that state things like:

For every hour you sit in front of the TV you raise the risk of death by 11%.

Sitting for more that six hours per day puts you on an early death list EVEN IF YOU EXERCISE.

People who sit are more prone to high blood pressure, depression, and cancer.

Sitting for longer periods of time predisposes you to developing diabetes and if you are already diabetic, then stick a fork in yourself because your done.

What seems so non-threatening or non-toxic to our body is basically just the opposite. We are heading for a society just like in the movie "Wall-E" where all the humans sit around reclining in chairs, eat fast food and drink sodas, LOL.

The reality is that many people have jobs that require sitting, and because of that most will just disregard the studies because there is "nothing they can do about it". But there are choices you can make that can minimize these detrimental effects. More on that in a moment...

First, from a musculoskeletal point of view, let me try and describe to you why sitting could be a major contributor of your aches and pains most commonly your neck, shoulders, and lower back. First of all, anything done repetitively and for an extended period of time is going to cause some over-use issues leading to breakdown and injury. Sitting is NOT exempt from the overuse category even though you may not feel as though you're doing anything harmful. The reality is that your body is always fighting gravity and the way your structure is aligned is going to forecast how long it will be able to handle those gravitational forces before it starts to breaking down.

Our office focuses on the Structural Correction of the spine. If the body has structural problems, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and discs are over stressed from the forces of gravity. Better ergonomics are not always enough. I look at ergonomics as a tool to help an already normal structure become more productive and withstand fatigue as a protective measure NOT a corrective measure. For example, a person with a herniated disc in their lower back might feel better with a seat cushion, but the herniation is still there and needs to be corrected. Applying better ergonomics to a broken structure is like putting tape on a baseball bat.....its temporary. Once a patient's structural problems are identified, a thorough game plan to correct and protect the structure is recommended for a long term solution.

The other dangerous part to sitting is the LACK of MOVEMENT. No matter how good your structure and ergonomics, you are still not moving! Our bodies are meant to move; joints need to go through full ranges of motion to stay healthy. Soft tissue (muscle & ligaments) will adapt to any position after about 20 minutes and become abnormally shortened or lengthened. On top of that muscles and fascia are designed to slide on top of one another. Lack of movement causes a gluing of these structures to one another that prevents normal function. When a cat wakes up from a nap, the first thing it does is stretch to become more mobile. This is what most people don't do after being immobile for long periods. This lack of mobility causes the body to compensate (Structural Shifts) and move abnormally leading to secondary symptoms like pain.

So what can you do? First, get a thorough structural assessment to identify any abnormal shifts in your spine. Second, get your work station assessed to see if it can be ergonomically improved. Third, move, move & move. See if you can do some work while standing and trade off. There are even treadmill desks that are becoming more popular. Fourth, perform some mobility exercises (especially for the lower body) to address the soft tissue affect of sitting. Fifth, if you have any questions, give us a call. A consultation is always no charge. It's a conversation, not a commitment.

The above question would seem obvious to most of us because we realize that round wheels are more efficient and faster than square ones. There is a saying that STRUCTURE DICTATES FUNCTION and this is very obvious for the bike wheel.

The human body has many examples of this as well. From the design of our cells to the shape of our joints; structure dictates function. When it comes to the spine, it has an optimum shape that allows it to be strong yet flexible.

The vertebra (individual bones) of the spine protect the central nervous system, and because the spinal column is moveable, it is susceptible to the various stresses and forces of life. This can cause it to lose its proper structural position. We realize that not many people have absolute 100% perfect alignment. However, no different than normal blood pressure, normal body temperature, and normal weight, there is a range of what is acceptable and what's unacceptable. If your structure shifts outside of what is considered normal, also known as "Vertebral Subluxation," then your body's function decreases leading to a secondary condition or symptom. These abnormal shifts or deviations in the spine can be present without you even being aware that they exist. Just like a cavity begins in a tooth, you don't initially feel the decay until it is bad enough to cause pain.

Throughout our lives, we engage in many activities that challenge the integrity of our spines; long periods of sitting, computer work, texting, and basically being bent forward are probably some of the most common reasons people develop spinal shifts that lead to a secondary condition (symptom). This is when they end up in my office. Most of these patients present with Anterior Head Syndrome. This is a condition where the head has a shifted forward beyond its center of balance. A shift in this structure creates a continuous strain on the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and discs primarily in the upper back , but also down into the mid and lower back region as well. This stress will result in symptoms such as headaches, neck and or back pain, numbness or tingling, muscle spasms, shoulder pain, TMJ pain, and pinched nerves just to name a few.

You see any force that the human body cannot adapt to causes a shift in the structure of the spine. The human head weighs 10-12 lbs on average. For every inch the head shifts forward from its normal position, it weighs an additional 10lbs. That means it actually gains weight! It's not uncommon for me to see someone with their head two inches in front of their shoulders. At this point their heads weighs ~30 lbs!! Do you think this could cause some muscle spasms, head aches, pinched nerves, etc...? (answer... YES!)

So having an abnormal structural condition, like Anterior Head Syndrome, will not only lead to the muscles, tendons, and ligaments being chronically overworked, but you will also have decreased strength and efficiency and a higher chance of injury. Just like the square bike tires YOU become very inefficient and break down.

How Do You Fix This?

For the sake of this blog, I have simplified the an example of a structural shift within your cervical (neck) region. In reality, there are numerous configurations that the spine can abnormally shift into. In the cervical spine there are at least 16 major abnormal possibilities from the side view alone! This is why general solutions do not work for everyone. Not everyone can just exercise their head back to normal or just practice "standing up straighter" to fix their structural problem. Traditionally chiropractors concentrate on pain reduction and improved ranges of motion. This is a great service for those who want just that. I look at the reason why the pain and immobility started in the first place. If its due to abnormal structure, then I know there is going to be abnormal function and therefore the structure needs to be addressed. Without this type of care, you may get rid of your symptoms but your structure will remain a square wheel.

If you have chronic issues with pain, mobility, or some other function of your body, give us a call for a consultation. It might be a structural issue that was never addressed.
How can I lose weight by cleaning my house?" Metaphorically speaking, the house I am referring to is your body. It is the house that actually counts, because it is where you have to live each & every day of your life until you die. Cleaning your house has profound effects on your health; one of which is weight loss.

Let's talk about cleaning house first. Our bodies naturally go through regular cycles of cleansing/detoxifying without our even being aware that it's happening. The primary systems involved include our liver, skin, lymphatics, digestive, urinary & respiratory systems. These all work together to neutralize & eliminate waste & potentially harmful substances that have entered the body. Sadly, each & every one of us now carries a toxic load/burden due to the overwhelming number of chemical substances in the environment, in our food, in our homes, in our water; in our lives. The body stores what it cannot get rid of & hence we all become a bowl of dirty toxic soup.

So, how do I know if I should detox? Each & every one of us should detox at least once a year, but if you look at the list of symptoms below & you answer yes to any of them you should start 2013 off right by cleaning house.

fatigue

acne

I have worked with a number of patients on detoxing their bodies & each & every one of them has experienced a life transformation. Whether it was a 25lb weight loss, the complete disappearance of diverticulitis or the overall improvement in mental clarity & energy, cleaning your house has amazing benefits.

Interesting question with no good answers. You would think by the way most people take care of their spine that they believe it will last forever. Maybe its because they're used to thinking that you can replace almost anything including knees or hips or maybe it's because they think that their spine will never wear out and if it does they'll just need a surgical "tune up" if things get too bad....OR.... maybe most people don't give it much thought, because they can't see it.

I tend to believe the last reason is the real answer. For the most part, we don't take care of the things we can't see. Whether its the regular maintenance of a car (oil, filters, brakes, etc..) or the inner systems of our body (cardiovascular, immune, nervous system, etc....), these things tend to get neglected. Although, sometimes I think people spend more time and energy on their cars than they do on their bodies.

Plastic surgery is booming because if we can see it, we will usually work to improve it; augmentations, liposuction, rhinoplasty, hair replacement, teeth whitening and teeth straightening, just to name a few, are all "outside" changes that for the most part have little to no affect on health. So what about the things inside your body that you cannot see that actually DO affect your health: your cardiovascular system, your immune system, your nervous system? Most people pay absolutely no attention to these parts until their bodies dope slap them & they experience a secondary symptom like a heart attack, an illness, or a pain that forces them to PAY ATTENTION.

If you realized the most important system in your body is protected and energized by your spine would you think differently? What if you knew "Wolve's Law"? That bone remodels to stress, and when your spine is under abnormal stress due to poor alignment, the bones will remodel and slowly change shape. AKA- osteoarthritis. This is NOT hereditary or due to aging, although it does get worse the longer the problem has been around. This is simple physics and joint biomechanics. Abnormal alignment leads to abnormal wear, which FORCES your body to try & fix the problem by adding new bone. This can be avoided if the affected joints are corrected and aligned properly because now the joint can function properly and better withstand the normal forces put upon it. I never enjoy having to explain to a patient that their spine has deteriorated so badly that the problem cannot be corrected. In these circumstance, their most likely path will be temporary relief of a secondary condition whether its by means of conservative care, medication, or surgery.

Albeit, most people come to our office with some type of secondary condition (Neck or Low Back Pain, Headaches, Disc herniations, Sciatica, Numbness or Tingling, Etc.....) Many times these secondary conditions could have been avoided if they took better care of the Structure of their Spine.

This is why we take special structural x-rays to asses the blueprint of your spine. If you can't see it, then your guessing, and I don't like to guess with people's health. Please don't treat your spine like it can be replaced, because it CANNOT! Knowing the condition of your spine is valuable information and can help you make better decisions regarding your current health.
Have a Great Day!
The tip of an iceberg is misleading as to its actual size beneath the water, just like symptoms are misleading as to their actual cause. A structural imbalance is often the underlying cause of secondary conditions (symptoms) as listed above. All too often we hear about various health care professionals attempting to address what is really a SYMPTOM of something more significant. It's like someone who keeps discovering cracks in their dry wall. They keep attempting to fill in the cracks, when what they SHOULD be doing is focusing FIRST on the foundation and internal structure of the home. Anything else is considered a temporary patch job.
There are FOUR signs that are absolute indicators of a structural imbalance. The
first is a structural shift. The second is loss of the normal curves in the spine. The third is compressed discs. And the fourth is degenerative bones. If one or more of these
INDICATORS reveals a Structural Issue or imbalance, then it stands to reason that your
structural issue is likely to be the underlying primary cause of your secondary condition / symptom. What we often find
is that other health care providers, who certainly mean well, will throw
anything and everything at the secondary condition without ever considering the
underlying structural issue. This is usually due to the fact that they are not
trained in detecting and correcting structural issues...in the same way that I
am not trained in mixing prescriptions. Does that make sense?
Like this is THE ONE thing they need to do to solve their back issues. Even though having "weak" core muscles can be part of the equation, it is a very incomplete picture.

What is the Core?

Core means center, the innermost part. When it comes to the human body, the core is the spinal column. The spinal column has a NORMAL configuration or alignment. Do you know yours? If you look at it from the front or back, it should be straight and vertical. Looking at a normal spine from the side, you will see "S" shaped curves. Researchers have even figured out what the normal radius of those curves should be. So just like measuring normal blood pressure, normal eye sight, normal temperature, etc..., we can measure normal structure of the spine with proper structural x-rays. This is vital in figuring out if you have ABNORMAL shifts or deviations that can be causing Secondary Conditions (Symptoms).

For example:

Neck & Back Pain

Sciatica & Hip Pain

Numbness & Tingling

Muscular Spasms & Tension

Headaches (Including Migraines)

Pinched Nerves

Herniated Discs

Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative Joint Disease

Decreased Range of Motion

Poor Posture

Dizziness / Vertigo

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Again, those are commonly Secondary Conditions (symptoms) that are a result of a Primary issue (poor structure).

So, getting back to your core exercises. Let's focus on the lower back for a minute. If you have suffered with lower back pain, I'm sure you have gotten all sorts of advice from family, friends, trainers, therapists, and doctors as to "The Solution". Kind of like getting rid of the hiccups; everyone has their favorite way. I'm not here to tell you they are all wrong, just that back pain is a Secondary Condition to some other primary issue that is going on. If we keep this conversation to just the musculoskeletal system in nature, then wouldn't it make sense to know what your core structure (spine) looks like before a prescribed treatment is given? Just looking at your posture is NOT going to definitively tell us what's going on inside.

Let me use another example. Let's say your front right tire has some abnormal wear and tear on it & you bring it to the shop where they rotate the tires. A few months go by and the right front tire now has the same wear and tear as the previous right front tire. So you bring the car back and have the tires rotated again. You keep doing this until it's time for new tires. You notice that these tires did not last as long as they should have, so you buy some better tires and low and behold the front right tire starts that same abnormal wear pattern. This time you go to a different tire shop and the first thing they ask you is "have you had your tires aligned?" The ding, ding, ding bell goes off in your head.

Performing core muscular exercises with a spine that does not have normal structural alignment is like rotating tires on a car without aligning the front end. You might have some temporary improvements with your secondary conditions, but your body is still less efficient with energy, movement, and strength. This sets your body up for more injuries. Take that one step further and realize an out of aligned spine will wear out faster than one that is properly aligned. The laws of physics and gravity will see to that.

Hopefully you're starting to see that even exercises for your core muscles could be harming your core structure! At Moore Family Chiropractic we do a complete structural exam on each patient to determine there structural status. This includes a complete set of Structural x-rays in a weight bearing position with proper set up as to not get a faulty picture. We perform a digital foot analysis to determine the status of the feet and how they are supporting everything above it. A digital postural analysis is done and compared to the inside structure as well as determine the outside degree of shifts and deviations from normal. Functional tests are also included on the structure and nervous system to determine how your body is responding to its current state. This exam gives us a very thorough picture of your structural status and then we are able to give you a treatment plan to best help you. And you know what, you might even receive some core structural care. It all starts with a complementary consultation, which is a conversation not a commitment.
No more food pyramid. Hello Food Plate!

Why is it that we have to be told what to eat? Seriously. How is that Americans are so out of touch with their food? Well, it started ages ago with the introduction of packaged & processed foods when we gave up nutrition for convenience. To learn more about how this happened & continues to happen read, "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan. It's a fascinating read.

O.K. back to the food plate. I'm grateful that there are initiatives to help people eat a more balanced & healthy diet, but where is the science that says eating all these grains is beneficial & NEEDED?

This is what the plate looks like with actual food. WOW! 6 servings of grains are recommended & only 2 servings of protein. I sometimes have to scratch my head wondering what ties these scientists have to the pharmaceutical & food industries. Let's get real folks. Besides water, most of your body is made up of protein. Your muscles & organs & your tissues. The body breaks down proteins into tiny substrates called amino acids which are then used to rebuild your heart, your liver, your muscles, etc. It is a vital component to your health.

Carbohydrates in the form that most Americans are consuming them (processed) are troublesome (my nice word for what I really think they are). Once in your body carbohydrates are converted into sugar. And what does your body do with that sugar? Well if it doesn't get used up as energy, it gets stored as fat. Yup, fat! With government recommendations like this, obesity & massive health problems are the inevitable result.

In our office, we not only can help you have better structural alignment, but we can help you nutritionally as well. Dr. Terri has studied nutrition for several years now & can help you get a better handle on what you're eating. Sometimes we all just need a little nudge to start making better decisions.

When is comes to resolving ones back pain, there are a lot of choices one can make in trying to accomplish this. They can range anywhere from bed rest to back surgery. Now I don't have to tell which is the risker option of the two, but I'm still amazed at the amount of people who opt for the riskier choice before trying something much more conservative. Let me state from the onset that I am not against all back surgeries. There are limitations that make it extremely difficult for the body to recover from and this is where surgery can be of help. I still feel even in those cases its not the only thing someone should do. (More on that further down)

For most people, disc injuries are years in the making and don't just happen. The disc is very strong and when it's with in a normal structure (normal spinal alignment), it can withstand some pretty heavy forces. As a matter of fact, sometimes the vertebrae will fracture before the disc gives out. Our lifestyles and the choices we make on activities generally determine our health. This include the health of our discs and spine.

Back to the choices we have to resolve the back pain...there are many. I think it human nature for a lot of people to look for the easy way out and that is why surgery is so attractive. It could also be that they were only given a few choices by their MD and they tried with not success and next on the list is surgery. Whatever the reason it still falls short. The injured disc, or even just back pain, is an end result of other dysfunctions that occurred previously in the body. Poor ergonomics, improper lifting, too much sitting, etc... leading to an abnormal spinal structure putting abnormal forces on the disc and so on. By the way, the only way to determine the extent of an abnormal structure is with weight bearing x-rays with a properly aligned x-ray system. This is the blue print of your spine. MRI are good for discs, not spinal alignment. Is this starting to make sense? Do you think it might be important to address those issues to correct this problem? Do you believe cortisone shots will do this? Now do you think surgery will do this?

"But I'm in too much pain to deal with all that now. I just need to get out of pain." I understand and that is why our office has a complete disc correction program. We use Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression to start healing the disc this gradually pulls the injured disc material back into its proper place with in the disc. Corrective spinal adjustments with spinal remolding exercises and therapies to re-establish normal spinal alignment and therefore better mobility, stronger core, and less likely to suffer with a future flare ups. There will be recommendations that will be given that will need to be followed as well. These can include back support, home care, ergonomics review and modifications, nutritional assessment, etc...

"This sounds like a lot of work." Yes it is. There is no silver bullet. I am not talking about uncomplicated low back pain. This is usually chronic and /or disc related. I've seen more than my fair share of back pain patients over the past 15 years. Some who have even had multiple surgeries with limited success. I have even recommended some to get back surgery. Not everyone is a candidate for our services. If you or someone you know is suffering with chronic lower back pain or a disc injury, call our office for a complimentary consultation. Its a conversation, not a commitment.
I was telling her how it cleanses the body & removes many harmful toxins that we are bombarded with every day. I happen to LOVE this program, because it truly shows people "how" to eat. Anyone can go on a diet to lose weight & most gain the weight back because they haven't learned life skills on how to eat. This program goes above & beyond that. A side effect of eating healthy is that many of my patients lose weight while on this program. My friend had an interesting response when I was discussing how we should be eating; she said, "Well I'm reactive hypoglycemic, so I can't eat breakfast or eat that often." It got me thinking about how confused people really are about what their bodies are doing.

My friend & I'm sure many others out there like her believe that hypoglycemia is a disease/disorder that they are afflicted with like cancer. But this isn't the case. Hypoglycemia is a process that occurs in your body when blood sugar levels do not remain steady, but dip down too low at certain times. A natural trigger then goes off to signal that the body needs more glucose. From there the body responds with a hormone called "glucagon" from the pancreas which will elevate blood sugar levels. My friend has been led to believe that she has "no control" over this disorder when nothing could be further from the truth. She has complete control over this & it starts with what she's putting into her body.

Simply eating carbohydrates, which is what most people eat, leads to a progression of blood sugar problems which can escalate into insulin resistance. This means that the cells are less responsive to insulin & are less able to get glucose into the cell (which needs it to create energy). Eventually this leads to weight gain, especially in the abdomen & torso.

Things you can do:

start each day with a breakfast that includes a protein & a fat, along with a non-refined carbohydrate

eat every 2 hours

decrease coffee/cola consumption

Remember this is a naturally occurring process in the body. It's vital to maintain steady blood sugar levels & you do have control over this.
You're not alone. Countless people go through the process of yo-yo dieting & yet feel like they've really gotten no where.

How is it possible that so many diets fail people? Well, it's because most diets involve only a"temporary" shift or change in the persons eating habits. What hasn't changed is the person mind set on how & what to eat.Without making this profound change, most people will go back to their original ways of eating; the ways that lead to their weight gain.

I have had the opportunity to help my patients lose weight, but more importantly to make that mental shift on how & what to eat. In order to change the results you've been getting, you have to change how you think. A new paradigm is in order to make life changing results.

Weight loss can be more than just taking in less calories than expended. For many people, women especially, weight loss involves not only looking at what you are putting into their mouth, but also what are your hormones doing. I'll discuss the roles of hormones & how they may be preventing you form losing weight in my next post.

Many times a patient will present to our office with one or more symptoms that are very incapacitating. They have usually tried a few different things to rid themselves of these symptoms and they're typically at a loss as to why they continue to suffer. More times than not, there is a primary structural condition that has never been addressed and therefore they are on a merry go round of treatments and ongoing symptoms. A very common example is back pain. I look at "back pain" as a big umbrella and underneath it there are various reasons as to why someone might be experiencing this. Structural imbalances within the skeletal system can be the primary cause, but where did it start? This is why we look at the WHOLE body for answers and not just the site of pain. For example, the foundation for our body in the standing position is the FEET.

Structure Dictates Function...

The foot is designed to un-lock, or pronate, when it hits the ground for shock absorption and to conform to variable terrain. Then it must re-stiffen (lock), or supinate for efficient leverage as we move ourselves forward into the next step. When either of these phases are excessive or out of synch, the foot has faulty mechanical function. Most people over-pronate, that is, their arches flatten too much (flat feet) and do not re-stiffen enough for efficient forward movement. A small percent of people are over-supinators with high, rigid arch structure. This leads to poor shock absorption and the body's weight becomes concentrated in a few spots. A healthy arch acts like a spring.

What if you have one good arch and one bad?

This is very common and will lead to a couple of things. First the function of that one foot will be poor as described above.

Secondly the faulty structure, arch, will lead to imbalances in structure in the knee, hip, pelvis, and spine. Its a chain reaction! (Add song here, foot bone is connected to leg bone, the leg bone is connected to the hip bone,.... ) Again this is where a complete structural exam will uncover all the structural faults and only then can we determine a thorough customized corrective treatment plan. This is also why Structural Foot Correctors are prescribed in our office to complement the other structural rehabilitation procedures and give the patient the best chance to correct their spine and structure.

What are Structural Foot Correctors?

Well, they are not some generic insole that you get at the pharmacy that looks comfortable and supportive from inside the box. Many times these sort of insoles feel comfortable, but in reality they do nothing to change the structure of your feet.

They are most likely not the ones your podiatrist custom made for you either. Although many podiatrists, PT's, and DC's are starting to use this style of foot corrector, at last check, we are only one of four offices in a 50 mile radius that uses them. The majority of medical studies have shown that standard custom orthotics are no better or worse than off the shelf cushions. This has not been the case for the Foot Correctors that we use. It starts in the way in which the foot is casted (molded) and then the foot corrector is made. This is crucial to obtain the ideal arch height and foot shape. They are calibrated for your weight, foot flexibility, and activity level; not to mention they are also made with top quality materials that will last over time. This allows for better foot function as well as actually changing your foot structure!

How do you know if you need Structural Foot Correctors?

In our office, it starts with a consultation. Then after reviewing your history and discussing how our office treatment and procedures work, we do a Structural Exam. Some of the tests that we do that would indicate the need for foot correctors are the following:

A particular x-ray view is taken to determine pelvic imbalance and leg length inequality (anatomical short leg).

A digital foot scan is performed to view the integrity of the arches and compare left to right.

Visual and digital tests are also performed to asses the alignment of feet, knees, and hips and how that affects the rest of your structure.

Your gait (the way in which you walk) is reviewed to determine if your structure is causing functional problems.

For more information call 781-826-5555 to set up a consultation. Remember, its a conversation, not a commitment.

Anterior Head Syndrome is an epidemic in our society. I could literally have a practice that just focuses on this serious primary condition. Anterior Head Syndrome, or AHS for short, is a structural condition in the human body where the head has moved anterior or forward compared to the upper back and shoulders (see picture above). Where should the head be, you ask? When looking at person from the side, the head should be centered directly over the shoulder. Because the ear is fairly centered on the side of the head, a good visual landmark for normal head position is the ear being centered over the middle of the shoulder.

Why the Epidemic?

Did mom ever tell you to "Sit up straight and don’t slouch?" Maybe you should have listened! Think about all the things we do that cause us to look down: poor ergonomics at a desk, laptops, texting, hand held video games, picking up children, reading, etc... Then there is the poor sitting issues such as the car (reclining the seat too far back) or the "slouch couch". And let us not forget that lager bellies (whether due to pregnancy or being over weight) will jut the head anteriorly to balance the body. So unless you are a svelte, ergonomically conscious ceiling painter, there is a good chance that you spend some time looking down with your head forward.

So whats the big deal?

Several things happen to the body when the head is anterior compared to the shoulder. For starters, the average adult human head weighs between 10 and 14 pounds and it takes minimal muscle effort to hold the head upright when it is centered over the shoulders. BUT, for every inch the head shifts forward, the weight of the head increases by at least 10 pounds, and the muscle effort needed to hold the head up significantly increases. Picture holding a bowling ball close to your body and then extending your arms forward with the bowling ball in your hands. The bowling ball gets much heavier as you extend the arms! Simple laws of physics and leverage. So your 10lb head now weighs 20- 30lbs if it is 1 - 2 inches abnormally anterior. This is why many people feel "tight" in their neck, shoulders, and upper back or tired at the end of the day.

Oh, but there is more..

When the head goes anterior, abnormal stress and strain occurs on the bones, discs, nerves, and spinal cord. This is due to the abnormal structural alignment the spine takes in this anterior position. Many prestigious medical journals and health clinics have already proven that AHS causes:

spinal decay

Correcting AHS is not an easy task and can take some time and effort. Traditional chiropractic manipulative style treatments usually do very little to address the issue. Most physical therapy and massage style muscle treatments usually do very little to affect the, ligaments and neck curve aspect of AHS. We use specific corrective techniques and rehabilitation that is designed to correct AHS. Finding a provider that focuses on structural correction of the spine and one who works on AHS every day, is a crucial step in improving you health.

Questions or concerns about AHS?

In office consultations are no charge.
Here is my story short and sweet:

I am 44 yrs old woman and two years ago my body started to give me messages that something was wrong—off balance.(rheumatoid arthritis flare up—don’t have it, insomnia, migraines, dry and greasy hair, dry skin, strong food cravings, lethargic, foggy, somewhat depressed because it was hard to get through my day) My doctor couldn’t help, blood work was ok, etc. I went to a naturopathic doctor who showed me how to do a saliva test. The results showed my adrenal gland was fatigued.

The way back to health was to take care of myself gently. I took some vitamin supplements to help but the biggest thing was to eat healthy (no gluten and sugar) and rest. It took about 9 months for me to turn the bend but I still wasn’t feeling up to par. During this time researching what my body was doing I read a lot about healthy eating.

It seemed so hard to give up so much of what I was used to eating.

Dr. Deane told me about the detox program Dr. Terri was going to support and I knew it was for me. I decided to do it. It was time.

After 21 days of doing the detox I feel great!! I love the way I am eating and I don’t’ miss anything. Unbelievable.

About the program- for me the first 5 days were the hardest . I was crabby –probably all the sugar leaving my body! After that I felt great. I remember looking at the calendar and seeing when I would have 21 days straight to commit to. I thought I picked the best time ( I did) but once I got into it I was challenged. I attended 3 cookouts/parties, had company stay at my house for 4 days and a family that didn’t want to eat the way I was eating. Well, I overcame everything! I cooked healthy meals for my company with lots of veggies. I packed my own food when I was on the go—so much easier than you think. What can be easier than grabbing an apple and packing a salad?? My husband now eats with me too. A lot of good things happened in those 21 days.

After the program, I still eat the same way and drink one shake a day. I have learned to love the shakes.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2842314872608911368.post-1274499752036882902010-09-21T11:12:00.000-04:002010-09-21T11:12:25.993-04:00Childhood Sport InjuriesDoes your middle or high school aged child play organized sports? Now that school has officially begun, school sports have begun as well. If your child plays on a school team, you might have already been to coach's night and /or have signed waivers for your child to participate. But, how does the school know that your child is fit enough to play a particular sport? Yes, I know that all sports require a medical exam prior to a child starting, but...

Do you know what is actually being checked in the pre-season exam?

This exam is, in most cases, simply a basic body systems' exam (eyes, ears, nose, throat, etc..) with a minimal scoliosis evaluation called "Adam's Test", which happens to be very vague and unreliable test. If a scoliosis is suspected on the exam, it is reported as either positive or negative on the exam form. From there, you are notified to follow up with your child's doctor and if its not "severe" then your child is on a "wait and see" status to see if the scoliosis worsens. There is so much I could write about scoliosis, but I will have to it for another blog. Realize for today that scoliosis is not the only structural test worthy of being tested. There are many other structural abnormalities that are left unchecked that can affect your child's injury status.

So basically, this pre-season exam provides almost no biomechanical information on your child's structure. Most potential sports injuries are biomechanical or structural in nature, and much can be done before the season begins to reduce the likelihood of injury. When a professional athlete is being considered by a franchise, that franchise puts the athlete through a battery of tests that also include speed, strength, flexibility, endurance, body composition, and structural integrity. They are not going to invest money for a player if they can't pass their exhaustive physical exam. Now I realize your child is not a professional athlete, but the point is that most of the tests that are performed by a professional franchise are for preventative measures. They are not going to sign an athlete that is going to be prone to injury.

A structural exam detects imbalances, weakness, and sites of potential injury. A detailed, customized corrective program is then designed to balance and strengthen these defecits before injury occurs. This is true preventative care!

I want to point out that I am not referring to serious traumas like broken bones, concussions, severe cuts and lacerations. Those are obviously traumas that happen no matter what condition your child is in. Again, most injuries that occur are biomechanical or structural in nature and are not addressed or corrected. In these cases, when a child is injured he/she is seen by a doctor, trainer, therapist, etc... A little rest and maybe some therapy is usually prescribed to address the injury, but the weak link in the child's structure was not addressed.

To you give you an example from our office, a high school sophomore came in with knee pain. The parents had already seen the athletic trainer and their primary medical doctor. Wraps, rubs, stretches, and medications were not solving this child's problem. We did a structural exam and found abnormal shifts in the child's spine, hips, knees, and feet. These are findings that are significant to allowing the child's joints to work normally without excessive wear and tear and undue stress. Just like if a mechanic found that the front end of your car is out of alignment, then the tires are going to wear down unevenly (arthritis) and the steering performance will be affected (muscles). Your child's structure is just like an automobile (metaphorically speaking), except that replacing your child's "parts" is not an option.

The patient was put on a structural correction program which addressed all of his issues. This patient is now in college and playing competitive sports without any relapse of knee pain.

Short term fixes are just that, short term. Long term fixes require a blue print and plan to correct structural problems to allow the body to be resilient to the stress put upon it whether it's from sports or just living life.

Have a great Day,

These tend to cause an increase in the loss of vital minerals into the urine. Most people think that when someone is a vegetarian that they have one of the healthiest diets around when in all actuality many western vegetarians have a diet that is loaded with refined wheat, refined soy, refined sugars & many other non-food sources. So, just by virtue of being a vegetarian doesn’t make one’s diet healthy & full of bone building nutrients.

A good exercise regimen would include 20-30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise, in addition to some weight training exercises. Bone responds to the stress/demands placed on them. Building muscles= building bones.

Despite synthetic vitamin D being added to milk & other non-foods, biochemically it is not a natural form of vitamin D & thus falls. Natural vitamin D is food in fatty fish & made in the skin. Unless you eat A LOT of fish & eggs, getting enough vitamin d from real food is difficult. Sunshine is a terrific way to boost your vitamin D levels to help ensure good bone health.

This is because most calcium vitamins are sold as the insoluble form of calcium, calcium carbonate. Chalk is made primarily from calcium carbonate. Check your vitamins & see. If you think this is a good form of calcium, save some money & just buy chalk instead of those vitamins.

This should be at a 5:1 ration: calcium to magnesium. Go ahead check that bottle again.

Women who get most of their calcium from real foods have stronger bones when compared to those women whose calcium comes from mainly non-food sources (i.e. calcium carbonate & foods fortified with calcium). Now What? Our office sees quite a few patients who suffer with disc problems and sciatica. They come mainly from referrals from other patients who have had great success in our office. I would be willing to bet that the reason our success rate is so high is due to the whole process and plan the patient goes through in order to correct their problem. Typically if you have a disc injury, it is most likely not the primary cause to your underlying problem. Yes, the injured disc can be putting pressure on a nerve sending pain or numbness into a leg, but its still not the primary cause. What is the primary cause you might ask? Well there are multiple reasons a disc becomes injured and most of these reasons fall under the umbrella of a structural deficit in the spine or frame of the body. Huh?

Let me give you an example. A patient comes into our office with lower back and leg pain. They have an MRI demonstrating a herinated disc at L4-5. Over the past five years, they have tried prescription pain killers and anti-inflammatories, cortisone shots, physical therapy, chiropractic, yoga, acupuncture, massage, and exercise. Some of the above mentioned strategies may have given a little symptomatic relief, but the pain always returned.

During a consultation I explain what our office focuses on, (structural correction of the spine), why that is important, (its the foundation that dictates the function of the muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves, and DISCS), and what indicators we are going to look for in the exam to see if their structure is abnormal. The patient begins to realize that they have not had an exam like this and nobody has really explained in very clear terms how this can be causing their pain.

The patient agrees to have the structural exam and can then see for themselves, the indicators of structural abnormalities. The first indicator was a short leg due to structural collapse of one of their feet causing their pelvis to be tipped and rotated to one direction putting compression abnormally one side of the disc. The second indicator was a significant loss of the normal lumbar lordosis (normal side curve) causing increased compression on the discs. Two of the indicators were so obvious for the patient to see in the exam, they were wondering why nobody else made mention of this.

There were more findings in this exam, but to get my point across I only need to discus those two. Since there was a structural component to the injury, anything but structural correction will give short term relief at best. Everything else the patient had tried previously might be successful for simple inflammation and weak muscles, but they didn't address the primary cause.

Even if this patient had spinal surgery, it would not have fixed their structure leaving them with a weakened foundation (the spine) and most likely problems in the future.

You might be thinking at this point, "how do you fix this person's structure?" Again, every case is different. Its not a cookie cutter approach. In this case, we needed to give the patient a treatment plan that corrected, as much as possible, all the abnormalities we found. The treatment plan included structural corrective adjustments with about 5-6 other corrective procedures performed in the office. The patient was also fitted for foot correctors and instructed to wear them in their shoes. Lifestyle and nutritional modifications were reviewed and reinforced to minimize any unnecessary flare-ups.

End result was a very happy patient with a new lease on life!

Dr. Deane
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2842314872608911368.post-79807637828686091372010-08-24T20:51:00.000-04:002010-08-24T20:51:42.738-04:00The New England Patriot's SecretFootball season is almost officially here and if you have been a Patriot's fan over the past decade then you know how well they have been doing, for multiple reasons. A few years ago, I learned one of their secrets to improved speed, power, and injury prevention. This secret was so guarded that when an athletic trainer let it out of the bag, he was fired. Professional sports is about winning. When you really have something that works in the NFL you keep it a secret. Coincidentally, this same trainer was picked up by the New York Giants a year before they upset the Patriots in obtaining their "perfect season" in the Super Bowl.

So, how does someone like me learn this secret? Well, the main person who developed this along side the athletic trainers was a chiropractor who focuses on structural correction of the spine. It just so happens, that this is what our office focuses on as well. We are a smaller subset of the chiropractic community that really has really has an enormous amount of research behind us. You see traditional chiropractors generally improve range of motion, decrease muscle spasms, and decrease pain. While our initial interest is the elimination of your pain, our fundamental goal is to restore your spine to as close to normal alignment as possible. While that is not always possible, it's important to understand that the closer the human body is to its normal alignment, the better it will perform.

What the athletic trainers noticed was that players with good lower back alignment and a normal lordosis (normal side view curvature), were the most flexible, the fastest, hit the hardest, and had the least hamstring injuries. When the Patriot trainers went to the NFL combine, they spent 3.5 million dollars on tests like x-rays & MRI's to assess the health status of 325 players. The Patriots used these diagnostics to look for evidence of a bulging disc, pinched nerve or spinal stenosis. Clearly, they only wanted to draft and keep players that have no evidence of back problems.

When a player had these conditions they were more likely to experience pain and a disability to play. To keep these conditions from becoming an arthritic (chronic wear and tear) condition, the athletic trainer's second goal was to find a treatment that would put the vertebra in the correct position and therefore correct what was causing the pinched nerve, bulged disc and the spinal stenosis.

This is where the Structural Chiropractor comes in. This chiropractor had already been working on structural correction with his own patients in his office when the athletic trainer, who was the medical and rehab director for the New England Patriots, contacted him. He was asked to not only design a program of care for their players, but to also establish a routine the players could do to protect their spines once they were in normal alignment.

The simple goal was to produce physically dominating players that stayed healthy throughout the season. Keeping your starting players on the field from beginning to end makes for a winning combination. This is not a new goal to any sports team; its just that the New England Patriots were the first to recognize the importance of a normally aligned spine. I've just recently heard that the Denver Broncos are now on board and I can't say I'm very happy about that.

The good news for you is that this technology and treatment is available in our office. For all individuals to function at peak performance & be the best they can be, it's vital that your spine is as closely aligned to normal as possible. To schedule a complimentary consultation, give our office a call. 781-826-5555.
If you are a parent, you probably enjoy the office supply store ad which uses a winter holiday song "Its the most wonderful time of the year." If you're a teenager, well...maybe not so much. Either way one of those supplies that you might need this year is a backpack. This is actually a very important choice for the health of your child's spine. Backpack usage has been correlated with the rise in adolescent back pain. There is also evidence that adolescents with back pain are more likely to have back pain as an adult.

As the twig is bent, so grows the tree.

It shouldn't be much of a surprise that if your child is carrying more weight on their back than they are capable of handling, then they might experience back pain. What most people forget is that this stress takes place daily over the course of the school year as your child's spine is growing.

Now take into consideration that the backpack is worn incorrectly putting more stress on one side of the body. This will cause the child's structure to shift out of NORMAL alignment putting abnormal stress on the muscles, ligaments, discs, bones and nerves. When done long enough, this will lead to secondary symptoms such as back pain. Quite often the childs spine will develop a scoliosis (abnormal shift in the spine). Research has shown that just 26lbs carried at least one time per week is enough to affect your child's structure.

What can you do to prevent this?

There really is no perfect solution. Kids seem to need more books these days; some schools lack lockers and/or are not giving kids sufficient time to get to their lockers. We also can't overlook the fact that even with out these factors, some kids will just not be compliant to change the way they carry their backpack. But here are some suggestions that can help.

1. Make sure your child is not carrying more than 10-15% of their body weight in the backpack.

2. Have you child wear the backpack with both straps over the shoulders and make sure the pack does
not hang more than 4 inches below their waist. This way they are less likely to lean forward due to the increased weight on the shoulders.

3. Make sure the shoulder straps are adjustable and are padded for comfort.

4. Do not buy a backpack that is too big. Remember if there is extra space they will fill it with something, increasing the overall weight of the back pack.

5. Having individualized compartments is good. This allows the pack to be balanced and prevents bulky areas from pushing into the spine.

6. Roller packs are not a solution due to the fact that they get over packed and eventually the child needs to lift the pack onto the bus and up stairs at school. A lot of schools have already banned the use of these packs because of the space issue in the schools and fear of someone tripping over them.

7. If it seems impossible to limit the amount of books your child needs to tote around, talk to their teacher and see if there is an alternative, such as second set of books left at home or just bringing lighter books back and forth.

If you have questions regarding your child's backpack and how it might be affecting their health, give our office a call. Consultations are no charge and if you bring your child we can make sure their back pack is set up properly.

Have a great day!
These warning indicators are secondary to a primary condition (low engine oil, low coolant in radiator, and low air in tire).

When it comes to the human body, our warning indicators are a number of secondary conditions (aka symptoms). Many times the cause to these secondary conditions is a more serious primary condition such as abnormal structural alignment of the spine. When the spine shifts into abnormal structural alignment, there is increased stress on the muscles, tendons, ligaments, spinal discs, and nerves.

For example, the human head conservatively weighs on average 10lbs. For every inch it shifts forward from the shoulders you can add 10 more pounds to the head. I commonly see patients whose heads are abnormally 2-3 inches forward. That means there head is at least 30-40lbs! Do you think this would cause neck pain or headaches? Yes and Yes! There many more secondary conditions that an anterior head can present with, but that is for another blog. My point is that this increased physical stress can only be resolved by correcting the primary condition (abnormal structural alignment of the spine). As a Structural Correction chiropractic office, that's what I focus on and the results are amazing.

Below are a small handful of secondary conditions that can common when there is a structural problem with the spine.

From a Mouthguard?

Yes it’s true! In the latest Men’s Journal there is an article which reviews these amazing benefits obtained from a special $2000 mouthguard. As the article states: “the gains weren’t huge while people were wearing the mouthguard, but they were statistically significant.” So significant that many top level athletes are getting this mouthguard made for themselves to get that competitive edge.

Why am I even writing about it you might ask? Well because of the mechanism in which the mouthguard helps improve your performance. You see dentists have known for years that when a head has protruded forward from the shoulders (we call Anterior Head Syndrome) can cause TMJ disorders. I even remember writing a report about this in chiropractic school and most of my references were dental books. This particular mouthguard allows the jaw to move into its optimal position. This creates better head and neck alignment as compared to the lower body. In other words the head is not as far in front of the shoulders as it previously was. This decreases the strain on the neck and shoulder muscles, increases range of motion, and in turn opens up the rib cage making it easier to breathe and improves balance.

My question is what happens when you take the mouthguard out? The guard, as good as it is, can only change a postural distortion while it’s in your mouth. What about the people who don’t notice much change with the mouthguard in? Many people have underlying abnormal structural problems that need extra help to correct.

In our office we correct abnormal structural of the spine and one of the most common is Anterior Head Syndrome (AHS). An extremely short list of secondary conditions such as

Headaches,

Neck pain and stiffness

Muscle tension/spasms

TMJ

Dowanger’s Hump (Granny Hump)

Rotator Cuff issues

Degenerative discs and vertebra

Fatigue

By correcting the primary cause, the anterior head, the secondary conditions / symptoms resolve. So, the dentists and corrective chiropractors can agree that correcting Anterior Head Syndrome will:

Improve your strength and balance

Decrease TMJ problems

Decrease neck pain and stiffness

Improve your energy!

What many people don not realize is that everyone, moms, dads, students, grandmothers, grandfathers, should go through a detox or purification program, whether or not you are a "drug addict" or not.

Why you might ask? Well, on a daily basis, each and every one of us, is exposed to countless numbers of toxins: the air we breathe, the soap we use to wash our bodies, the water we use to brush our teeth, the coffee or tea we drink, the processed cereal we have for breakfast, the pesticides in our food, the clothes we wear, the list goes on & on. Even if you are someone who has gone completely organic in your food choices, you are still exposed to toxins.

Although your body is designed to rid itself of these toxins, it can become overwhelmed & overburdened with the process. This is where detox or purification comes in. By detoxing your body you allow it to rest & rebuild it's inner environment.

Some of the symptoms of being toxic are:

headaches

feeling tired ( even in the morning)

uncontrollable food cravings

problems losing weight

brain fog

digestive issues
